SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. The climate is changing. Even faster than we can possibly imagine. Eventhough it's impossible to distinguish between the importance of the goals, for me this goal might be the goal that does stand out a little bit. Without an earth to live on, all the other goals will never be able to come to full use. But are we able to catch up on the climate change? Is it still possible for us to change our way of living to keep the climate from warming up? These questions are questions that come to my mind often. We know climate change is an urgent matter and needs to be controlled as soon as possible. To start with, I will show you a short introduction video on climate change and the SDG.

What I really love about this video is that it really makes you think and that the clips make you feel something. Its a simple video showing the issues of where we are now and what could happend to our world either way around we go. The video is catching and is delivering a clear message. The climate is changing and the disasters that come with it are leaving a trail of death and devestation as said touchingly by Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations.

A good introduction to the goals of the SDG climate change. As said before climate change is not just a theoretical concept. Climate change is a real and urgent issue that has already caused devastating impact worldwide, think about natural disasters such as: destructive wildfires, heavier hurricanes, floodings etcetera. As the UN describes, consequences of climate change also include flooding and drought, which have the potential to displace millions of people from their homes and push them into poverty and hunger. These effents can then result in denying acces to the basic needs. All these examples are a direct consequence on climate change. What are we doing about this?

Well for example, there is the Paris Agreement. In 2015 the UN Climate Change Conference reached a breakthrough to tackle climte change and its negative impacts. The agreement set long-term goals for all nation which you can find on the website of the UN. The agreement was signed by 194 countries, who have plegdes to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and regulary report on their progress. The agreement also includes a mechanism for developed countries to prived financial support to developing countries helping them with their efforts towards climate change. If you would like more information about this topic there is a short video of the UN that explains it further.
The Paris Agreement is a good example of trying to achieve the goals for preventing further climate change. But the goals are not mandatory. This means that the goals that are described in the agreement do not necessarily have to be achieved. This makes it difficult to actually try and pursue the goals. But as we know, sanctions are sadly also not always the solution. But how do we tackle the problem then?

The best thing that we can do to change the world is to unite. If all countries work together on a solution, we can be the change and save the world and thereby human kind. But unfortunately is this option way too good to be true. Tackling climate change is complex. There are multiple challenges and solutions that need to come together. We need to transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy, such as wind, solar etcetera. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions will also be a crucial factor in achieving a change. For example by investing in sustainable public transportation and sustainable agriculture practices. Next to that ecosystems schould be protected and stay the way they are, or be restored.

Finally, I think education and creating awareness in climate change is an absolute necessity. Individuals can make better sustainable choices and changes in their daily life. Governments should invest in making the country sustainable and schould implement policies that encourage sustainability and reducing the emission in a country. Tackling climate change is very complex but we as a society need to act sooner then later. We got the tools to do better and make our world sustainable. And how difficult it may be, this will requir a global effort with everyone to do their part. So that we can ensure a livible planet for our nature and the future generations.

I think it will be very difficult to get everyone to unite on this topic. So I don't know if it is realistic to ask individuals to change their behavior. In my opinion the responsibility lies with big companies and governments. But as we have seen during the elections in March the people have voted on a party who doesn't want change to happen. With creating awareness I hope people will better understand the importance of reducing emissions. But creating this awareness should be done in a sensitive way otherwise it will only lead to more polarization. Jana Rings

The topic you raise in your blog is a good one I think. It is also very important I think to keep this topic highlighted to make people aware of this problem. Whatever you point out in your blog it starts with creating awareness because ultimately we all have to tackle this together. Ultimately, I do think the biggest role lies with governments, though, for tackling the problem, by shaping regulations to reduce emissions. I also think it is important for rich countries to financially support poor countries to make the switch to green forms of energy. A great topic.
